Chord Melody Guitar, bossa nova, East & West Sussex

I love South American guitar music especially Brazilian guitar.  Having heroes such as Baden Powell, Luiz Bonfa to more modern guitarists such as Yamandu Costa.  I enjoying playing the classical guitar but adding in improvisation like the Brazilian maestros do!  Here’s a video I recorded a while back of me playing solo guitar on Antonio Carlos Jobim’s famous tune Desafinado.

I play out and about around Brighton, East Sussex, West Sussex and London in solo guitar format or duos, trios or bands.  May catch you sometime!

Jazz Blues, Improvising fluidly on guitar

We had a thorough look at the jazz blues in the last class of Sussex Jazz Guitar School.  We focused on the various “turn arounds to two” which are also found in a great number of jazz standards.

In the next class on 19th October, we shall be looking at weaving hip jazz lines through the chord changes of the jazz blues.  It’s not essential that you attended the last class.  We will be mapping out a multitude of arpeggios and scale positions on the guitar neck to help us seamlessly navigate through the chord changes.

It will be helpful for you to refresh on previous classes regarding the various arpeggios contained within a dominant chord.  We investigated this in depth on classes a while back now.

We will look at a blues in G.  Here’s the bog standard chord changes.

G7          C7          G7           G7

C7          C7           G7           E7

Am7       D7          G7         D7

Of course there are many chordal embellishments within this form which we shall mention in class.

So!  Have a revise of this!  Get the arpeggios under your fingers for the 3 dominant chord below.  If not, just focus on G7 which we have covered before.

G7  contains the arpeggios  G7 from the root, Bm7b5 from the 3rd, Dm7 from the 5th, Fmaj7 from the 7th

C7 contains C7 from the root, Em7b5 from the 3rd, Gm7 from the 5th, Bbmaj7 from the 7th

D7  contains D7 from the root, F#m7b5 from 3rd, Am7 from 5th, Cmaj7 from 7th

Don’t worry if this seems complicated – all will be broken down simply in class!

The next dates are Sunday 19th Oct, Sat 15th Nov, Sun 14th Dec.
If anyone wants a lesson before hand, I have slots available.

Here’s Jimmy Raney playing a Jazz Blues.  This is the sort of thing we are aiming for – a fluid improvisation following the changes!

Jazz Blues, a thorough analysis on guitar

Jazz blues is a staple of the the standard jazz repertoire along with Rhythm Changes and a whole host of standards.  This Saturday 27th at Sussex Jazz Guitar School we will be focusing on this much played form.  Mastering the Jazz Blues is essential as a blues will always be called on a jam session and working on it will also involve learning how to solo over static dominant chords, two five ones and “the turn around to two!” of which there are many variations!  The “turn around to two” which may be unfamiliar to some of you is found in many bebop and jazz standards and we will explore the various possibilities of this.  We will look at at least four variations of this.  I will also give a historical evolution of the jazz blues and how it mutated from the standard blues by adding different chords and progressions especially through the bebop era of Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie.

I will also show you tricks or different ways to think about soloing over the changes especially the change from the One Dominant chord to the “Four” Dominant chord.  So here is the prep work,

Memorize the Jazz Blues progression below and listen to as many Jazz blues as you can this week ie, Now’s the time, Billies Bounce, Sandu, Tenor Madness, C Jam blues, Straight no chaser, Blue Monk.

Note we’ll be looking at the standard Jazz Blues not the Minor Blues, we can look at that another time!

F7          Bb7          F7          F7

Bb7         Bb7         F7          D7

Gm7        C7           F7         C7

This is the simplest form and we will explore all the variations and alterations on this form.

See you this Saturday 27th, 11am at the Brunswick! 2.5 hour workshop until 1.30pm.

£20 per lesson, £55 for chosen 3

The next lessons after 27th are…

Sun 19th Oct
Sat 15th Nov
Sun 14th Dec
