Prep Work Sat 21/3

Sussex Jazz Guitar school is on this week Saturday 11am 21st March at the Brunswick.  I got great feedback from guitar students regarding last month’s lesson saying how it was a different way to approach creating jazz guitar lines and comping.

This month’s class will be an extension of this where we will continue to learn more ways to create jazz lines outlining the changes and approaching it in a different manner to last time.  We will start with a recap then extend the concept even further and look at how we could create a “work out” over a jazz standard tune.  In this case, “The night has a thousand eyes”.  And once learned, this will give you a clear, concise and focused method of learning new tunes, embedding the harmony in your ears and fingers and seamlessly weaving lines through a tune with many different key changes.

Those of you who were not here last time, it’s ok as we will do a recap at the start of class and you will easily pick up the concept.

Here’s the prep work….

1.  Go through again the videos on the last blog entry before this one on “intervalic concepts, double stops, solo jazz guitar”

2.  Have a look at the chord changes to the tune below.  Melody not needed.  Don’t worry about the D pedal over the A section,  normal Gmaj to D7 is fine.  Google pdf it if you can’t read below.

3.  Revise Tritone Subs!

See you this Saturday 21st, 11am til 1.30pm, Brunswick Pub, 1 Holland Rd, Hove!

As always, if you want to secure a space, pay online before hand.

£20 per specified class, £55 for 3 specified classes, no refunds.

Intervallic concepts, double stops, solo jazz guitar

Sussex Jazz Guitar School this month will be looking at a different way of creating melodic solo jazz guitar lines rather than running through scales or even arpeggios.  We will be looking at the various multitude of possible intervals contained within different chords and use these to create both single note jazz lines and lines with two notes (double stops) to fill out our playing making it sound beefier which is also great for unaccompanied solo jazz guitar.

We will be thinking outside of the box and using these ideas to create interesting solos using intervals spread out over a wider distance than usual.  Intervals such as a 6th and 7th.  The clusters of notes we shall find will also be used for comping in jazz band situations.  So this work has many applications and it’s stuff you won’t find in books or videos either!  It’s my own in depth investigations with the goal of creating a different sound for jazz guitar.

As long as you know basic chord forms, the material in the class will be instantly useable and everyone can work at their own pace and level.  You can do as much of the work below as you want (or none at all, you can use shapes you already know).  But if you learn all of these inversions in the videos you will definately have a large amount of chordal options on the guitar thus producing a broader melodic pallete and more possibilities for exciting jazz lines.

In class you will see how this is instantly useable and each tweak we do along the way will  twist, turn and evolve into a whole new world of improvising.

Here’s the videos…

1. Fminor7 , bottom 4 strings

2.F7, bottom 4 strings

3. Fmaj7, bottom 4 strings

4. Remaining strings sets (middle 4 strings & top 4 strings) for Fm7, F7, Fmaj7

We will look at how we can approach soloing and comping over the Jazz Blues or any Jazz standard.

See you at the Brunswick next Saturday 21st, 11am til 1.30pm !

Sussex Jazz Guitar School Prep 24/1

Sussex Jazz guitar School prep is here for 24th Jan!  We will finish up our investigations on tritone substitutions & Lydian Dominant scale.

This week we will learn how to create melodic, zig zaggy, twisty turny jazz lines over dominant chords.  We will use these lines in various situations..

1.  Over a 11,v,1
2.  Over a blues
3.  Over II dominant chords before they resolve to II minor (and how to resolve them).  For this check out the F7 in There will never be another you, the D7 in Take the A train & So danca Smaba and more.

I will show you special bebop devices and drills and then show you how to use them over jazz standard tunes.

Everyone can work at their own pace as I have mountains of tasks for ALL ability levels!

Get these arpeggios under your fingers for a C7#11 (or C7b5) chord.

C7 from root
Em7b5 from 3rd
Gm7maj7 from 5th
Bbmaj#5 from 7th

Even if you think you know some of these arpeggios, I’ll show you how to link them to scales doing both single note line work and mad sounding superimposed big and little chords!

On the video, I show first ..

GmMaj7 then Bbmaj7#11 then C7 then Em7b5 then Gm7maj7 then Bbmaj#11

Also revise C7 lydian dominant scale C D E F# G A Bb

Memorize the order, try in other positions and other keys..

See you Sat 24th, 11am Brunswick Pub.
Following classes Sat Feb 21st, Sat March 21st.

£20 per class, £55 for three
Non refundable
