Jazz quartet featuring Simon D’souza on saxophone

Friday 10th February see’s the late night jazz sessions kick off at Doug Ellingford’s new bar “The Brighton Blue Note” (Hove actually) underneath the Greenhouse effect, 63 Church Rd, Hove.  Every Friday there will be a special featured guest musician accompanied by myself on guitar with drums and double bass in a quartet setting.  The music will be from 11pm until 1am.  They’ve redecorated the basement, added booths and transformed it into a great space ideal for jazz gigs!  The bar is open from early with music starting later.  Guest musicians are welcome to sit in and play.  Visit their website for details.

For the first night we have great Brighton based saxophonist, composer and music educator Simon D’Souza.  Simon is a brilliant tenor playing bursting with energy and creative ideas and a beautiful soprano player as well.  I have seen Simon perform in a variety of settings from the popular big band “Straight no chaser” and his sextet “Spirit” where I depped on guitar once at the Sussex Jazz Festival at Forest Row Jazz club.  I was really impressed by Simon’s original compositions and enjoyed getting the chance to play them (check out his album “Under the influence”).  Young jazz musicians in Sussex are fortunate to have Simon passing on his knowledge of music through his teaching on the Chichester Jazz Course.

We have a rhythm section of scorching drummer Loz Thomas who is in great demand everywhere on the local jazz circuit and plays with band “The Mummers“.  On double bass we have Terry Pack – with a career that spans the decades he has played with a multitude of bands across the world.  He is also a profilic composer – check his latest album “Palimpsest” featuring an all star cast of UK talent.
