Jack Kendon, Trumpet, Fri 9th March, Brighton BN Jazz

Last week was a great night of jazz courtesy of vocalist Sara Oschlag.  We had some guest guitarists sitting in, the wonderful Jason Henson tearing it up and Gypsy Jazz guitarist Matt Guez spicing things up.  This week we have local trumpet sensation Jack Kendon.  Jack is the son of well-known double bass player and jazz educationalist Adrian Kendon.  I first met Jack some years ago at Chichester Jazz Course when he was a young 17 year old bebopper brimming with enthusiasm and potential.  Since then he has completed his Jazz studies at Middlesex Uni and moved back to Brighton and plays  in various settings around town.  Jack can be found each Thursday at the Bristol Bar in Kemptown where he runs a fun night of jamming with special guests.  He also plays in soul / hip hop group E.M.E – I saw them play a brilliant gig at the Hydrant, check them out whenever you can like at the Western Front on a Sunday night.

On bass duties we have Nick McGuigan, Loz Thomas on drums and me on guitar.  Special guests will be sitting in.  As usual the bar is open early from 7pm playing jazz classics with it filling out around 10pm.  The band are on from 11pm until 1.30am with folk staying there until 4am – and it’s free entry all night.  Next week  16th Feb we will be having Sax man Richard Beesley.  For info visit the Brighton Blue Note’s website and check out what other music they have down there.  The venue can be found underneath the Greenhouse Effect, 63 Church Rd, Hove.

SO quartet, Friday 2nd March, BBN Jazz, Hove

Things are really going well under the Greenhouse effect.  The bar’s really taken off and is full of jazz aficionados enjoying the live band (11pm til 1.30am) and staying until 4am – it’s quickly becoming one of Brighton’s most popular late night hang outs.  It’s a great mix of people from seasoned jazz club goers to the enthusiastic and very appreciative young BIMMers who all make for a great atmosphere and we thank them all for supporting the night!  And to Doug who runs the BBN (they have music other nights as well) and has put so much hard work into getting it off the ground along with Alex.  We’ve has some fantastic acts such as Simon D’souza, Rob Heasman and Paul Greenwood along with hot rhythm sections.  Here’s a clip from last week at the Paul Greenwood gig with the Heas sitting in.

This week we have excellent jazz vocalist Sara Oschlag.  Sara can be seen singing all around town in duos, trios and bands.  Anyone who wishes to see some great singing can’t miss this.  As well as sweet, swinging jazz tunes you’ll see bouncing Sambas sang in Portuguese and fast, rip roaring tunes like Cherokee and A night in Tunisia complete with beautiful scatting and plenty of interplay with the band such as trading fours with drummer and more – Sara really does know how to create an exciting gig with a confident command of the band.

On drums we have Preston Prince.  Preston’s drumming career has led him to work with artists such as James Hunter, Van Morrison, Viola Wills, Bap Kennedy, Camille O’Sullivan, and Astrid Williamson. Originally from New Zealand, Preston now resides on the South Coast of England where he has established himself as one of the south’s most in-demand teachers, working at Brighton Institute of Modern Music. He’s also an expert drum builder, his company Tiki Drums making some of the country’s finest bespoke kits.

On bass it’s Dan Sheppard.  Dan’s been playing with virtually everyone on the Jazz scene for years now and is in high demand for gigs and sessions as well as running successful nights around Brighton – Green Door Store on a Wednesday being a must for anyone who enjoys top jazz bands!  Amongst the multitude of musicians he’s played with are the great Jimmy Scott and his band The Jazz Expressions at Ronnie Scott’s, guitar hero John Etheridge, tenor titan Bobby Wellins, former Oscar Peterson drummer Bobby Durham, former McCoy Tyner drummer George Johnson. Regular bands include Brighton Jazz Allstars, Ultraswing, Rockin in Rhythm, Candela and Hai la Drum.

I’ll be chuggin’ away on guitar!  Come down and enjoy the company of lovely people in a convivial atmosphere till the wee small hours 🙂
